One of the toughest judgments ever for animal cruelty in South Africa was handed down by a Krugersdorp court today.

Antoinette van Wyk (34), a mother of three, was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for five years, plus a further 12 months house arrest after pleading guilty to animal cruelty after leaving her pet dog to suffer in agony after one of its back legs had been ripped off.

The trial of two men accused of burying a dog alive on the sports field of a Cape Town school, begins on Friday 13th January.

Poto Mfengu and Mkhumbuzi Ncedana, janitors at the Luhlaza Secondary High School in Khayelitsha, are charged under the animal cruelty act and will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court.

A search warrant was executed Monday morning for the removal of the dogs, and the animals are being transported to a nearby emergency shelter where they will receive medical care and treatment. The ASPCA is also collecting evidence for the investigation as well as lending the services of its veterinary forensics teams, led by Dr. Rhonda Windham, medical director of the ASPCA’s Field Investigations and Response team. The owner of the puppy mill facility, Pam Thomas, has been arrested and charged with three counts of felony animal cruelty.
