IFAW helps care for wildlife victims in Oklahoma following Moore tornado

Rescuers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org) have mobilized another team to Oklahoma. Their mission: to help care for wildlife affected by the devastating Moore tornado. Resident raptors, mammals and songbirds were injured and displaced by high winds and habitat destruction.

IFAW’s team is working with The WildCare Foundation located just 18 miles south of Moore in Noble, Oklahoma. The facility has received an additional 60 animals as a result of the disaster and reached out to IFAW for help.

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), at the request of Central Oklahoma Humane Society (OK Humane) in Oklahoma City, Okla., has dispatched its disaster response team to assist with shelter operations as the facility experiences an influx of animals affected by the devastating tornado that hit Moore, Okla. on May 20.

A tigress named Zolushka (Russian for Cinderella) was successfully released to the wild by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW – www.ifaw.org) jointly with the Phoenix Fund, Special Inspection Tiger, A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

As it happens frequently in Russia’s Far East, the Amur tigress became an orphan in the winter of 2012. Zolushka’s mother was a likely victim of poaching.

First wild rhino calf born in India to a mother hand-raised by IFAW-WTI

A healthy, female calf has been born in Manas National Park, to a rhinoceros hand-raised by IFAW-WTI as an orphan and moved to the park as part of a species reintroduction.

“This is the first calf born in the wild in India from a rhino that had been hand-raised, rehabilitated and released to the wild,” said Azzedine Downes, president and CEO of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org).

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW- www.ifaw.org) announced today an emergency grant to rescue the last remaining 10 big cats from Riverglen Tiger Sanctuary near Mountainburg, Arkansas. The funds are being used to build temporary enclosures for the tigers at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR), located 80 miles to the north.
