Endangered Amur Tiger Released to the Wild in Far East Russia

A tigress named Zolushka (Russian for Cinderella) was successfully released to the wild by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW – www.ifaw.org) jointly with the Phoenix Fund, Special Inspection Tiger, A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

As it happens frequently in Russia’s Far East, the Amur tigress became an orphan in the winter of 2012. Zolushka’s mother was a likely victim of poaching.

An estimated 10,000 to 20,000 big cats are kept as pets and for profit in places like basements, backyards and roadside zoos throughout the U.S. today. In fact, the U.S. is thought to be home to more captive tigers than are found in the wild. Exact numbers are a mystery—nobody knows exactly how many dangerous big cats are being kept in private hands, under what conditions, and where.

This past Friday, the Detroit Tigers organization posted photos on its Facebook page of its star players handling a tiger cub at a spring training camp.

Tracy Coppola, Campaigns Officer, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW; www.ifaw.org), issued the following statement regarding the event:

“Undoubtedly, the Detroit Tigers, like so many other animal enthusiasts in the U.S., did not realize the photo op presented some fairly significant public safety and animal welfare issues.
