EU Sells Out Polar Bears at CITES

The EU delegation currently in Thailand at an international conference is actively derailing the polar bear’s best chance of survival. While the United States, supported by the Russian Federation, is hours away from securing vital protections to ban a significant threat to polar bears—international commercial trade—the EU just put forward an alternate proposal that would validate Canada’s current unsustainable hunting levels.

A coalition of groups is applauding a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to reject a challenge to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2008 decision to list polar bears as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The ruling keeps in place the current ban on the import of trophies of sport-hunted polar bears from Canada.

IFAW calls for more cooperation between NGOs as delegates gather for 16th CITES

On the eve of the 16th Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in Bangkok, IFAW is urging conservation NGOs to come together to discuss how they can improve the way they coordinate with each other to protect animals on the ground.
“There are now more than 50 NGOs involved in the CITES community and their role is more important than ever, especially when they work together,” says Azzedine Downes, CEO and President of IFAW and head of IFAW’s CITES delegation.
