Climate Change and Animals

Global warming and resulting climate change are impacting all the ecosystems and animals on our planet, including our marine wildlife and the ocean. Regional climate changes have resulted in increased numbers of storms, floods and droughts, which affects wild animals’ migration, nesting and hibernation activities as well as the availability of regular food sources. Meanwhile rising water temperatures, sea levels and ocean acidity are affecting our coastal habitats and the animals that live in or near them including polar bears, whales, seals, fish, penguins and turtles.

IFAW’s new Climate Change and Animals series of teaching resources explore the impacts of climate change on animals and people. Our first units in the series include two student magazines, lessons and worksheets which introduce the theme and address in particular the impacts on the marine biome. The lessons and experiments within the packs will encourage your students to examine some of the concepts that play a role in climate change, including feedback loops, temperature and salinity in driving convection currents, and carbon dioxide’s role in increasing ocean acidity.

These resources are appropriate for middle and early secondary school students and are aligned with various National Science Standards Practices, Crosscutting Concepts and Disciplinary Core Ideas.
