IFAW helps animals in flood ravaged Indonesia

In response to this disaster, IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare - www.ifaw.org) and CARE (Center for Animal Rescue and Education) have mobilized a team to rescue domestic animals that were left homeless and abandoned and to provide basic veterinary care for the animals that survived the floods.
 
IFAW arrived in Jakarta on March 2, and joined the CARE Rescue Team that has been conducting assessments and proving emergency response to animals in the affected communities since the second week of February.

Science – not guns – sought for management of South Africa’s elephants

In making the announcement, South Africa’s Minister of Environment and Tourism, Marthinus Van Schalkwyk, said that his department would commit an initial five million rand ($675,000 or 514,000 Euros) to explore science-based options for the management of South Africa’s elephant populations.

Celebrities Mobilize Against Canadian Seal Hunt

Even the death of thousands of newborn pups in the Gulf of Saint-Laurent due to global warming has not prompted the Canadian authorities to cancel the hunt as recommended by the experts. In this particular respect, Canada's attitude can be qualified as highly irresponsible.

Three Siberian Tiger Cubs Rescued in the Russian Far East

Last weekend two cubs were found by a logger and a truck driver on the roads of the Chuguyewski district in the Primorye region. The young tigers were so exhausted from hunger and frost that they did not flee from the men.
 
“These tigers look like they are only about two months old which indicates they were likely abandoned by their mother tigress,” said Igor Beliatski, of IFAW.

Elephants Released To Wild for First Time in India

The elephants—which were hand-raised at the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC)—were transported 450 kilometers from India’s Kaziranga National Park to Manas National Park.
 
In Manas the elephants will be reintegrated into a wild herd once they are familiarized with the area. It is the first time elephants have been rehabilitated and released to the wild in India.

Clampdown on South African Canned Hunting and Captive Breeding Welcomed

IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare – www.ifaw.org) said the new regulations sent a clear message to the hunting fraternity that it is time to clean up the industry.
 
While hunting of captive bred predators per se has not been altogether stopped, the new rules will make it extremely difficult to qualify for hunting permits
 
IFAW said it was very encouraged by the new legislation.

New scientific report indicates a recent lack of sea ice is dangerous for Canada’s harp seal population

As the report indicates, in nine of the past 11 years, average ice coverage has deteriorated to well below the average ice cover seen over the last 37 years. A lack of suitable ice, combined with violent storms and early ice break-up disrupts the seals’ normal pupping season. Reduction in ice cover can result in increased pup mortality if there is no ice for mothers to give birth on or if the ice melts before the end of the nursing period.
 
The Canadian government has indicated that it is dedicated to taking ‘real action’ on global warming.

Outrage at Plans to Axe Met’s Wildlife Crime Unit

IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare - www.ifaw.org), WWF, ACAP and the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation have written to the Mayor who sets the budget for the Metropolitan Police Authority. The budget for the Wildlife Crime Unit is £80,000 a year – a drop in the ocean compared to the overall Metropolitan Police Authority budget of £2.5 billion.
