Introduced by Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME), the Ship Strike Reduction Act of 2008 would order the Secretary of Commerce to finalize federal regulations enforcing speed limits on ships, regulations that were first proposed in February 2007 and already delayed for over a year.

Nearly three tons of ivory torched in Japan

The initial confiscation of the ivory took place in August 2006, and represents the largest ivory seizure ever in Japan. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry indicates that the contraband was destroyed last month.
 
According to Michael Wamithi, Program Director for IFAW’s global elephants campaign, “IFAW is pleased that Japan did the right thing here. Destruction of the ivory is the only way to ensure the ivory will not end up filtered back into the marketplace. However, this is not where Japan’s responsibility ends.

Nearly one ton of ivory seized in Guangxi, China, largest ever in region

“The pictures indicate that the ivory is most likely from African elephants, as you can see by the shape and the length. Also, the estimated monetary value of the ivory is a clear indication of the lure this trade presents for criminal syndicates globally,” comments Michael Wamithi, the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s (IFAW – www.ifaw.org) global Elephants Program Director.
 
This seizure marks the largest amount of ivory ever confiscated in the Guangxi province of China, neighboring with Vietnam.

“We are very pleased that the Russian government is taking steps towards ending the whitecoat hunt,” remarked Masha Vorontsova, Director of IFAW Russia. “We acknowledge this step as an important achievement for animal welfare; however the government must do more -- we look forward to the full closure of the harp seal hunt in Russia.”

IFAW's Katie Touhey Receives Red Cross Animal Adult Hero Award

Touhey and her team of four full-time staff joined IFAW last summer after working as a separate organization for nearly ten years. The stranding network, which has a dedicated corps of more than 350 local volunteers, responds to approximately 500 reports of stranded marine mammals each year in and around Cape Cod.
 
“We are proud to have Katie leading IFAW’s stranding work,” said A.J. Cady, IFAW’s Director of Animals in Crisis and Distress.

IFAW returns rehabilitated black bears to wild in India

The bears were hand raised at the Center for Bear Rehabilitation and Conservation (CBRC), a project jointly managed by IFAW, WTI, and the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department. This unique rehabilitation center, located in northeast India's Arunachal Pradesh state, directs orphaned bears through an 'assisted' release programme. Before the bears are permanently released to the wild they are acclimatized to their future home which they roam free by day but return at night to sleep in the center. Today, 5 of the 11 bears at the center took the next step toward being released to the wild.

Rhino and elephants returned to wild in India, protected land increased

The animals, which were hand-raised at the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) in Kaziranga National Park, were translocated yesterday, by truck, 450 kilometers to Manas National Park. Manas National Park is a World Heritage site in northeast India which has seen wildlife populations decline dramatically in recent decades. IFAW and WTI have been working together for several years to restore the park’s ecosystem, including increasing the populations of endangered animals.

London's wildlife crime unit saved from the axe
