Veerman wil zwaarbevochten Gwwd afschaffen

De Gwwd werd in 1992 na 20 jaar strijd van kracht en is de centrale wet voor de bescherming van dieren in Nederland. Het ministerie van LNV wil de Gwwd nog in deze kabinetsperiode - dus al binnen enkele maanden - opheffen. De dierenbeschermingsorganisaties vrezen dat centrale waarden van de Gwwd zoals de intrinsieke waarde van dieren en het ‘nee, tenzij’-principe zullen verdwijnen. De thans al minimale bescherming die de Gwwd aan dieren biedt, zal hierdoor verder verminderen.

Zeehondenjacht weer begonnen

Dit sculptuur, 2 meter hoog en 3 meter lang is te zien op de Hofplaats, ter hoogte van het Drees monument. Ernaast, op een groot videoscherm, zullen beelden van de zeehondenjacht te zien zijn. Deze actie is de laatste van een serie waarbij het IFAW zich richt op de zeehondenjacht in Canada. Soortgelijke acties zijn door het IFAW deze week uitgevoerd in Parijs, Brussel, Londen en Berlijn.
 
Joanneke Kruijsen (PvdA), een van de indieners van het Nederlandse wetsvoorstel dat de handel in zeehondenproducten zal verbieden, zal a.s.

Canada kondigt nieuw quotum af ondanks internationale kritiek

Nadat Canada had toegestaan dat er de afgelopen 3 jaar bijna een miljoen zeehonden werden gedood, de grootste jacht op zeezoogdieren in de wereld, is de nieuwe vangsthoeveelheid min of meer gelijk aan de voorgaande jaren. Alhoewel de Canadese regering wel een management plan voor 5 jaar heeft opgesteld, heeft ze nu slechts de TAC (Total Allowable Catch) voor 2006 vrijgegeven.
 
De jacht krijgt voortdurend veel internationale kritiek door het wrede karakter en de verspilling.

Japanse walvisvloot zet koers naar walvisreservaat

Het IFAW en andere natuurbeschermingsorganisaties over de hele wereld veroordelen deze stap, die als een plotselinge escalatie van de jachtactiviteiten door Japan kan worden beschouwd. Op grond van de nieuwe vangstquota die Japan zichzelf heeft toebedeeld, zullen zij dit jaar twee maal zoveel walvissen doden in de wateren van de Zuidelijke IJszee die reeds in 1994 door de Internationale Walvisvaartcommissie (IWC) als beschermd werden aangewezen.

Iceland urged to abandon whaling

The British, French and German governments also issued a message which strongly criticised the Marine Research Institute’s proposals for 39 minke whales to be taken this year.

 

IFAW condemned the recommendation as cruel, unnecessary and economically unsustainable and called on Iceland’s Ministry of Fisheries to abandon the practice. It is also concerned by proposals to take a further 100 whales next year.

Iceland resumed whaling two years ago on the grounds of scientific research.

Jaarlijkse zeehondenjacht in Canada van start

“Er zijn mensen die in de waan verkeren, dat Canada al tientallen jaren geleden is gestopt met de jacht op zeehondenbaby’s,” zegt Marcel Bertsch, directeur van het Nederlandse IFAW kantoor. “Maar de commerciële jacht zoals die nu door Canada met moderne middelen wordt gevoerd, is de laatste 50 jaar niet zo omvangrijk geweest.”

Elk voorjaar trekt de hele Noordwest-Atlantische zadelrobbenpopulatie naar de oostkust van Newfoundland om daar te paren en hun jongen ter wereld te brengen en te zogen.

IFAW: Shell agrees to move oil pipeline to protect endangered Western Gray Whales

Shell announced today that they will move the pipeline 20 kilometers to the south, away from the main feeding area of the critically endangered Western Gray Whale. A coalition of environmental organizations from around the world has been demanding that Shell move the pipeline for several years.

 

This February, a group of internationally renowned IUCN experts published a scientific report confirming that the Sakhalin-2 project threatened the extinction of the Western Gray Whale.

Het IFAW viert de overwinning

Het IFAW heeft hier onvermurwbaar campagne voor gevoerd sinds 1989 waarbij gesteld werd dat jagen met honden zowel wreed als onnodig is. Door geen enkele wetgeving zou deze vorm van jagen humaan kunnen worden gemaakt. Twee opzichters hebben onweerlegbaar en essentieel bewijs geleverd voor het wrede karakter van het jagen en de kwade praktijken gedurende de jacht.

Elephant poaching in DRC and seizures in Vietnam show elephants imperiled by ivory trade

These disturbing events come after seven months of record poaching incidents and seizures. IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare - www.ifaw.org) commends the authorities for arrests that have been made but warns that much more needs to be done to reduce the threat to elephants.
