Dr. Valeria Ruoppolo

IFAW Veterinarian

Work

Valeria has been involved in the IFAW Animal Rescue Programme since 2000. The majority of her work as a marine animal husbandry, health and rehabilitation specialist has focused on penguins and seals, with time spent in Antarctica on elephant seal and penguin research projects for both Brazil and the US.

An expert in oiled wildlife rehabilitation, Valeria has been a key member of the management team at spills around the world and served as on-scene coordinator for multiple oiled wildlife responses in South America. She also led the team that responded to an unusual mass stranding of juvenile penguins along the Brazilian coast in 2008.

In addition to her work with seals and penguins, Valeria is a founding member of Projeto Biopesca, a Brazilian NGO which monitors cetacean and sea turtle bycatch. The organization has provided important data on bycatch risk and other threats to the vulnerable Franciscana or La Plata river dolphin. She coordinates a number of research projects on bycatch issues for Projeto Biopesca in collaboration with the University of Sao Paulo.
