International Fund for Animal Welfare Emergency Relief Officer Shannon Walajtys shares this heartwarming story of a family reunited: Debbie and Steve Gabbard lost everything in the flood waters down in Memphis, TN. They luckily got out of their home in time to take their three beloved dogs and two cats to the Emergency Animal Shelter set up to take care of displaced residents' pets. Their cats settled in quickly but the dogs only settled in once they got to know us some and began to trust us. They were inseparable, two large pit bulls named Diamond and Big Daddy, and Chico, a tiny Chihuahua mix!! Debbie and Steve let us take pictures of them with their dogs about one week after they had dropped them off in our care. They could not believe how happy and well adjusted they were at the shelter. Mark Vogel was the IFAW search and rescue team leader in Tennessee and had a special bond with Chico during his time at the shelter. Here's a letter from Debbie (and Chico) to Mark, her words say it all.

Hi Mark, Chico. My name is Debbie Gabbard better known as Chico, Diamond and Big Daddy's Mom. So sorry that it has taken so long to send an e-mail to you we have been so busy trying to get our life back in some kind of order. We were finally able to pick up the animals about two to three weeks ago. I was so happy to see them and they looked wonderful! They almost tore up the place when they saw us and Chico almost flew trying to get out the ladies arms that was holding him. It has been another adjustment for them since they came home to a new place and new things. They went through a little bit of anxiety for a while until they got used to their new surroundings but they are doing great now. Chico still rules the roost around here and keeps everyone in their place. I really wish that we had been able to have met you while you were here in Memphis, I heard a lot of things about you and Chico and it does my heart good to know that someone took special interest in the little guy. Thank You so much for all that you did while you were here in Memphis not just for us but for all of the animals that you helped. You really do a great service for animals. I am attaching some new pics of Chico and the gang. Please stay in touch I have met some wonderful new friends through all of this and I consider you a friend of ours but more importantly of Chico's. Thanks for all you do. Chico and Debbie Gabbard

Her letter brought tears to my eyes. I am glad when those helped actually take the time and initiative to show their appreciation with such heartfelt truth. So many times our jobs are thankless; thanks to Chico for sending the letter.
