Canadian Grey Seal Slaughter Opens With Increased Quota of 60,000

A juvenile grey seal.

Well, I guess it wasn't totally unexpected. We knew that the commercial hunt for grey seal pups on Hay Island, Nova Scotia, could happen at any time. And sadly, this morning it was made official - the Hay Island seal hunt is set to open today, with a quota of 1900 seal pups.

The most outrageous part of today's announcement is that it occurs mere days after the I Love Nova Scotia celebrations, where literally hundreds of people approached IFAW and let them know of their love for seals and their desire to see them protected rather than killed.  We were overwhelmed by the number of people who approached us for photos, saying they were against the seal hunt and that it was an embarrassment to Canada and to Atlantic Canadians. Unfortunately, this blemish on Nova Scotia's otherwise wonderful reputation seems set to continue.

The overall quota for grey seals has been increased to 60,000 animals - which would represent a shocking 80% of the pups born this year!  With markets for seal products rapidly dwindling this quota seems absolutlely ludicrous - no doubt a political gesture in attempt to win fishermen's votes in the next election.

Please take action and let the Nova Scotia Minister of Tourism, Percy Paris, know that you think the Nova Scotia seal pup slaughter should be stopped. Grey seals are far more valuable left alive as an attraction for Nova Scotian residents and tourists than they are dead, to be turned into trinkets and toys.

I know! I think that yes, we should respect our environment. Humans are part of that environment as much as animals are. It makes NO sense to hate humans and be preiudiced against them.

And maybe they have to make a living killing animals. There are so many regulations out there that they'd starve if they tried to run any other business.

Buck, I do not hate all humans or myself come to that...however, there are so called humans that I dislike with a vengeance. I am an animal lover full stop....... I am not naive to think that the circle of life does not exist . If an animal is treated with respect when it is killed by communities for food etc that is understandable... These animals you refer to whether they are around the corner or continents away have no voice of their own, its people like me and my fellow animal lovers that abhor the violence that is inflicted on defenceless animals and speak up for them..... You are not in a position to tell me what to do with my life you do not know me!!! as i do not know you... your comments are a tad insulting ......

Wow, half of the people posting loathe humans... which means... you hate yourselves??? I don't understand the thinking process there. Sounds like most of you need some self help, rather than wasting your time trying to help an animal that resides on the other side of a continent. How about go help out at a soup kitchen... or spend some time with your parents. And I absolutely love how every liberal loves taking the opportunity to bring up George W. Bush with every negative issue, no matter how unrelated. You are all sheep! BAAAAA

Listen, you people must have better things to do then harrass families that have been taking part in a hunt that is a tradition. The seal hunt has been part of Canadian Atlantic for hundreds of years. You live in your big cities and a board with your lives and need to get in whatever cause that you can, even if not educated on the matter. How about you go visit these communites and see how easy it is to live there and how difficult living and trying make a livley hood as a fisherman is. Many of these communites use the animal in it's entirety and see the creature as a delicacy, treating it with nothing but respect. But you people know nothing about respect. Why don't you go chain yourselves to some trees or something.

It's probably worth pointing out that the figures here only apply to grey seals. Harp seal slaughter has not yet begun, and the quota for that is much higher. I think around 330,000 last year?

So in total, there is the capacity to massacre around 400,000 seals. Truly horrific and barbaric.

Appalling. And symbolic of the entirety of man's mistreatment of animals. In the US we now allow murdering Canadian Geese by the truckloads. But this behavior is pervasive. Humans are despicable, with small exceptions.

Its a disgrace! If these poor animals do indeed need to be culled (so us greedy humans can eat their fish) Is there no more humane way to do this? Personally I'd love to club those hunters repeatedly about the head.
