European Union to Canada: No Means No

A sealer in action.

Today Canada’s Fisheries Minister, Gail Shea, announced that Canada is launching a formal challenge of the EU ban on the trade of seal products at the World Trade Organization. Achieving the ban was a long and hard won battle for IFAW, our supporters and other groups around the world. You can be sure that this will galvanize us together once again to fight and ensure the ban is defended and upheld.

The European Commission has said that it will 'vigorously defend' the values of EU citizens in the face of a WTO challenge, as they should. In the meantime, the Canadian government continues to ignore public opinion polls that show the majority of Canadians disapprove of Canada challenging the EU seal product ban at the WTO, and that Canadians would rather see their taxes used to phase out the hunt and support alternatives for sealers and their communities.

Some experts have estimated that a WTO challenge will cost at least 10 million dollars – about TEN TIMES what the seal hunt actually brings in to sealers in recent years. Hard-earned tax dollars wasted on a WTO challenge could be much better spent providing sealers with sustainable livelihoods in industries that don’t stain Canada’s reputation on the world stage.

Just yesterday, a story in the Postmedia News indicated that an EU trade agreement could be at stake because of Canada’s commercial seal hunt and the dirty tar sands. If this is the case, Canadians have a lot to lose. Drawing attention to this annual slaughter in the WTO will only remind the world how inhumane and unnecessary Canada’s commercial seal hunt truly is.

It takes more than money It takes commitment. One must do whatever is necessary Sometimes that requires a physical presence. If we all showed up in protest at this dispicable "event" participants would feel a bit more threatened and perhaps they would give more thought to their actions.

Our government is us! We all share blame because we don't stand up - as we should - at critical times. We live in a self-absorbed society. How many facebook posts are actually productive. Most people are more interested in what they are consuming rather than making it a better world. It takes effort to make a better world and sometimes it takes sacrifice. I - Me - Mine!

I had nightmares about this as a child. I couldn't believe that people would allow such a thing to happen? Now I know that the people who care are a very small minority. Even those in the majority should have a modicum of common sense allowing them to see the horror of this.
As an American, I am ashamed of the animal cruelty happening in our country. I sure hope our president gives support to this ban.

The US is no different. We slaughter defenseless wolves to name one species. It is all for greed. It is barbaric and cruel and shows our governments ignorance as well. I've been involved with animal rights since 1975. I have seen cruelty so horrific I became physically ill. The news media does not report half of what goes on. If the news media did air even a fraction of the animal issues we fight for I would think (hope) there would be a lot more people getting involved and questioning what our tax dollars are used for. Yet for the last 3 days I have been bombarded with Charlie Sheen crap. Who gives a ---- about him. And take Michael Vick-he's back on the playing field making millions and is an idol to teens. (Not my kids) Most people in ANY government would sell their own children if it meant putting a wad of cash in their pocket. Bottom line-they just don't care. Sad but true. I am glad there are people out there like us who do care but we are heavily outnumbered.

Enough is enough....I LOVE Canada, I love the caring hearts of folk like Sheryl Fink and Fred O'Regan. I love the folks who have empathy for all other sentient beings. I look forward to the day when EVERYONE will see the barbarity in what these folks like to do for a living. Bludgeoning a defenceless creature to death could not be too Spiritually rewarding or uplifting. We are praying for Stephen Harper to rescue the seals and create a whole new industry for the "Sealers"....just like he did for the Forest Industry.
