European Union to Canada: No Means No

A sealer in action.

Today Canada’s Fisheries Minister, Gail Shea, announced that Canada is launching a formal challenge of the EU ban on the trade of seal products at the World Trade Organization. Achieving the ban was a long and hard won battle for IFAW, our supporters and other groups around the world. You can be sure that this will galvanize us together once again to fight and ensure the ban is defended and upheld.

The European Commission has said that it will 'vigorously defend' the values of EU citizens in the face of a WTO challenge, as they should. In the meantime, the Canadian government continues to ignore public opinion polls that show the majority of Canadians disapprove of Canada challenging the EU seal product ban at the WTO, and that Canadians would rather see their taxes used to phase out the hunt and support alternatives for sealers and their communities.

Some experts have estimated that a WTO challenge will cost at least 10 million dollars – about TEN TIMES what the seal hunt actually brings in to sealers in recent years. Hard-earned tax dollars wasted on a WTO challenge could be much better spent providing sealers with sustainable livelihoods in industries that don’t stain Canada’s reputation on the world stage.

Just yesterday, a story in the Postmedia News indicated that an EU trade agreement could be at stake because of Canada’s commercial seal hunt and the dirty tar sands. If this is the case, Canadians have a lot to lose. Drawing attention to this annual slaughter in the WTO will only remind the world how inhumane and unnecessary Canada’s commercial seal hunt truly is.

Well perhaps the EU should make all the laws for the whole world.
Then again perhaps the whole world should vote on who makes the decisions in the EU.
Or don't you believe in the democratic right of a country to make it's own laws?
I agree the method of Killing any species that are used for food should be Humane.
Perhaps guns with silencers should be used. But by Canadian law it's not allowed.Perhaps an exception should be made.
Conservation experts say that to let the seal heard increase unmanaged would end in the end of various species of fish and make the harvesting of human seafood redundant.
Our government limits the annual harvest of seals to what is deemed a reasonable level.

Is Not tipacle of governments - How they waste the publics money. I am sure if it was comming out of their own pockets you would see quite a change in spending money. They dont mind giving them selves big raises off the backs of the real workers show me anybody that works for the Goverment that ever put in a full days work

Canadians don't want the hunt - we oppose it vocally when ever it comes up.
But Harper feels he is above listening to the people who put him in power, trusting that he would do his job - to represent us. That is what he is paid for.
Clearly he is representing his own interests, and screwing Canadians along the way.
That is my money they are using to try and continue something that the whole country wants stopped.
To sum up - our elected officail is using our money to do things that we expressly do not want.
How is this not a violation of the rights of all Canadians?
We don't represent Politicians. They represent us.

Sorry but I also agree with Mr.Flecknell, Most of the seal hunters are deposed fishermen from the maritime provinces. If the seals are not hunted or controlled , #1 the people who hunt them families would go without, 2 the already depleted stocks of Atlantic Salmon would be depleted out of existence, So the question is this, does the seal hunt (which is limited) stop or does an entire other species become extinct? If you want to point fingers and place blame take into consideration the Japanese and South east Asian fishing fleets, with their five mile long drift nets, who are responsible for decimating many species, including tuna, whales, seals, these people will eat anything. put the blame where it really belongs, instead of on a part of Canada that has been decimated by the overfishing of others. Do not assume I'm a heartless ahole, but I will always put the welfare of the men and their families first, and who really gives a s_it about the European Union.

Mr. Flecknell, do you really appreciate the Canadian Government forking over your hard earned dollars to challenge the EU ban? I DO NOT APPRECIATE IT!! It is also been proven that seals do NOT deplete the fish stocks, BUT HUMAN BEINGS. THE VERY HUMANS THAT ARE KILLING THE SEALS. They have been provided with a buy out proposal. I wish they would just take the damn deal and go away. I will never support Newfoundland and Nova Scotia until the seal hunts end. I have no interest in going there for a visit or purchasing anything that they have to offer. Ms. Levy, I agree with you, I have been doing the same writing our counselmen and to no surprise, I have yet to receive a response.
