Western Pacific gray whale observation season begins!
Post by Grisha Tsidulko, IFAW, Russia Office
Today, IFAW observers (Zheniya Dolgova, Maksim Sidorenko and Iliya Teryaev) arrived to Piltun lighthouse to start the monitoring of Western gray whales (WGW) in 2009.
This year it was especially critical to collect as much data on whales early in the season as possible, thus the observers arrived to the research site exceptionally early. When they first climbed the 32m lighthouse they could still see some floating ice at the horizon and washed ashore, but the area where whales feed was clear from ice. The group arrived to the lighthouse late afternoon, and had just enough time to make their selves comfortable, since the house had been closed since last September. No observations were made this day.
