Entanglement And Welfare Issues
The IWC’s Head of Science presented the report of the one day scoping meeting for a workshop on entanglement. The original concept for the workshop from Norway was that it dealt purely with methods of euthanasia for whales that could not be released. Australia and the USA were successful in broadening the scope of the workshop to emphasize techniques for disentanglement and rescue of animals. Guidelines for release and euthanasia are expected outputs of the 3-4 day workshop that will now be held following next year’s IWC meeting in Madeira. Consideration will also be given to a subsequent workshop on entanglement prevention.
