Whales on the agenda for new Australian Government.

In good news for anti-whaling campaigners, when the newly elected Labor Government met on Monday 3rd of December, whales were high on the agenda. Peter Garrett, Minister for Environment, Heritage & Arts (and ex-lead singer of Midnight Oil), raised the issue in the first cabinet meeting after being sworn in.

In the lead up to the election Labor pledged that they would take Japan to international courts, make formal representations to the Japanese government, enforce Australian law banning the slaughter of whales in the Australian whale sanctuary and monitor whaling vessels operating in Australian waters.

The promises have been made, and now there’s the expectation that the new Government will keep them... I'll keep you posted.
