Ocean Viking Heading South

There are 50 relieved councils and communities around the Australian coastline who had 'adopted' humpback whales through IFAW's Humpback Icon Project (HIP). Knowing that the whales they had claimed as their own would be seen again in Australian waters, with Japan's announcement that they would no longer have humpbacks in their sights.

We are all even further relieved that the Ocean Viking, a customs patrol vessel, has set sail from Western Australia at last. It's mission is to carry out surveillance on the Japanese whaling fleet, within Australia's Economic Exclusion Zone in the hope that photographic and other evidence gathered by the customs officers onboard, can be used to mount a legal case against the Japanese Government to stop whaling. With reports that 300 whales may have already been killed this season, it can't happen soon enough.
