Seal Vessels Stuck in the Ice

Reports are out that sealing vessels are stranded in heavy ice and strong winds on Newfoundland’s northeast coast and in southern Labrador. The Canadian coastguard is using icebreakers to try to free boats stuck between Cape Bauld and Cape Bonavista. There are also boats stranded in the Strait of Belle Isle.

IFAW is concerned for the safety of the sealers and we hope that they will all return home safely. With unpredictable weather and ice conditions sealing is a dangerous occupation and the unpredictable conditions are one of the reasons the hunt is so cruel—getting a clean kill in these conditions is not easy.

With indirect subsidies provided by the Canadian Government in the form of Coastguard icebreakers and promotional delegations trying to prop up an unsustainable industry—it is clearly time for the hunt to end.

The Canadian Government should instead invest in alternative, safe and sustainable employment opportunities for those who subsidise their incomes by sealing.

Man Up, whatever Mother Nature metes out to the seals and their diminishing environonment could never be as barbaric and cruel as being clubbed over the head repeatedly and skinned alive. Yes, give the seal population back to Mother Nature. I am sure the seals will have a better chance with her than with the sealers. And in the words of one of your own, the sealers "only do it for the love of it anyway"....phew!, in any world, that is really sick.

The lack of ice being referred to earlier this year was in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The heavy ice conditions are off the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. These are two very different areas, and two different birthing grounds for harp seals.

check out the ice for yourself,it's average 65 MILES WIDE...365 MILES LONG...and holding 40 boats fast for the past 2 weeks. So to say there's not enough ice for seals to pup on is a bit of an understatment I think. It's so thick & heavy the coast guard can barely get through it....check any news story and you will see for yourself.CBC.ca/nl or VOCM.com

Man up: I don't know where you get your statistics from, unless it is from the all seeing, all-knowing DFO and totally inaccurate figures it spouts (the DFO is so out of touch with reality it would be laughable but for the potential extinction of a species if it continues on course). The harp seal population tripled since the 1970s; unfortunately, the figures ignore the fact that between 1950-1970, the population was reduced by as much as 2/3rds from seal hunting. DFO is now "back-tracking" and admits the seal population has decreased. As it is, and due to the lack of ice pans this year, environmentalists have suggested that about 75% of the seal pups died before the hunt even began. So, DFO says its ok to wipe out the remaining pups?!!! The government has its head buried in the proverbial ice!

trouble is....man/greed upset the balance of nature....harvested all the cod, caplin, herring etc etc and now the seals will overpopulate and start to die off because of lack of food...there are 5.6 million now so it won't be long before there is large die offs...logic tells us so....they can't crawl ashore and eat trees....WHAT THEN ????????

I hope all their damn boats sink...they get home safe..and get other work, and say to themselves. God works in mysterious ways...Look at Japan and the whailing ships...same time, and same thing....you can't keep slaughtering these animals and not have MOTHER NATURE TAKE OVER...PRAISE HER TO THE MAX!!!! I've been waiting to see karma hit!!!!!! Yeepee....Now for real....show these people...don't buy Canadian seafood....This could be the magic year..and next year The harp seals might be saved. Maybe the fisherman and the Goverment there will think of touring the Nursery and making money that way, instead of death. Let those ships sink..with the blood on the sides with it!!!
I for one am a happy women today!!!!! and have been for the last week. Those fisherman are not frightened enough yet. Very ironic though.., the ice they kill on might kill their very own ships! Mother Nature is her own Hackeystick,!! Love it. Tune into my talk show in Maui 1110AM on Fridays at noon or call in 808-242-7800 Hawaii time.
This is Teri and I'm Pau for now:)

Canadian sealer Desmond Adams was quoted on Saturday, April 21, in the Newfoundland media as saying, “We all go out for the love of it rather than the money, which isn't there anymore." From "Toronto Star"
Unbelievable.. I am disgusted, from the words, of these cowards !!!

Please think about what is expressed here.
Wishing harm, and worse still, death and destruction on the humans trapped out in the ice, gives the impression that as long as the hat fits our own personal cause, we are all capable of barbaric and cruel behaviour.
We should first do no harm, and second do what you can to effect positive change, in a humane and intelligent way.
To overtly wish death upon the ones we have been protesting against ultimately places us squarely in the same bloody cesspool.
Despite the strength of my anti seal hunting convictions, I resent being linked to a radical narrow-minded group that shows concern for one species and none for another. Real carers of all things on our planet do not discriminate when it comes to preserving life and the environment.

Our concern can be genuine, whether or not IFAW's is. Wishing death to sealers only breeds more antagonism and defiance; it is no way to stop anything.
I do not support or approve of commercial sealing at all. But I will not try to strenghthen the walls of hatred between myself and my fellow humans. You do what you like.
