We love New York’s ivory ban

Today, on World Elephant Day, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed that ban into law.

New York is a huge hub for the import and sale of elephant ivory in the U.S., which ranks among the largest ivory markets in the world. The ban comes on the heels of a new IFAW investigation which found that auctions – including ones in New York – are likely contributing to the elephant poaching crisis, due to nearly nonexistent safeguards that would restrict ivory sales to legal antiques.

State legislation like the bills signed by Gov. Cuomo today and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie last week will enhance federal level efforts to protect elephants—a species being slaughtered at an alarming rate to meet growing global demand for ivory.

Thank you to New York for being a leader.

Thank you to our coalition partners for helping to make this possible. And thank you to those states who will see this as an opportunity to do the same.
