Spotlight Mexico: after dark days, Coconut the dog has a bright future

This week during a visit to Cozumel, Mexico, our team discovered a dog in desperate need of help. Covered in used motor oil and little more than skin and bones, we found him as we were passing through the mangroves – dense, jungle-like swamps – in the remote, south east side of the island.  In his mouth was the carcass of an opossum, as he was starving and scavenging for anything to eat.

But despite his hunger, when he saw the team he stopped what he was doing and came towards us. Our plans for the day swiftly changed as we began to do whatever it would take to save this dog.

I named him Coconut, a fruit that is dark on the outside yet bright white on the inside. This was both in honor of his amazing transformation at the hands of the team, and our hope for his bright future.

Thanks to our incredible local partner, the Humane Society of Cozumel Island (HSCI), Coconut will continue to receive the care he so desperately needs. He has tested positive for heartworm, so his recovery won’t be easy. But IFAW and HSCI will do everything we can to save him.

Watching our team rescue this dog was an inspiration, and testament to the dedication and professionalism of those working on the ground. Knowing HSCI will continue caring for him gives me hope for his future.

Our teams make this happen, but our supporters make it possible. Stay tuned for updates on Coconut, who is currently being cared for through HSCI.
