Peter Pueschel

Director, International Environmental Agreements 2001 to 2015

Work

As Director, International Environmental Agreements, Peter focused on IFAW’s policy work and represented IFAW at international conventions and treaty negotiations that addressed a variety of wildlife and environmental issues.

Peter led IFAW’s policy work from 2001 until 2015, when he passed away from a sudden illness. He left a legacy of compassion, integrity, and courage that continues to inspire us all in our efforts to build a better world for animals and people.

Previously, Peter was Head of IFAW’s Tiger Programme. He also led the development of the Wildlife Trade Programme and served as Regional Campaign Leader within the European Union. He served in an advisory capacity to IFAW’s Wildlife Crime and Consumer Awareness Programme and IFAW’s European campaign to end the illegal ivory trade.

Over more than three decades, Peter gained international experience in senior positions at sea and on land all over the world, from local hands-on involvement to high-level international policy negotiations. Because of Peter’s leadership, IFAW was instrumental in increasing international protection for many wildlife species including several shark species, seahorses, turtles and tortoises, whales, elephants and tigers.

He brought IFAW into the fight to end wildlife trade over the Internet and had an important role successfully convincing eBay to ban ivory auctions. He led the development of IFAW’s Think Twice campaign, which urges tourists around the world not to buy wildlife souvenirs in their travels. He was also instrumental in developing IFAW’s wildlife law enforcement training programs.

Peter was a regular contributor to IFAW publications and spoke frequently before media, government, corporate and civil society audiences. He addressed EU Parliamentary Intergroups and the EU Commission, the U.S. Congress and the INTERPOL Environmental and Wildlife Crime Working Group.

He was a regular IFAW representative at international conventions such as the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD).

Peter was dedicated to making this precious world a better place for animals and people by bringing animal welfare values and sound concepts into international agreements and legislation using innovative ways to favorably influence policy makers and the public.
