Mark Pestov

Mark Pestov coordinates “Attention! Tortoises!,” a project implemented with the support of International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Rufford Small Grants Foundation and the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU).

Mark is an individual member of the International Social and Ecological Union from 1998. Since 2000 he is a member of the Nikolsky Herpetological Society, and since 2004 a member of the Societas Europaea Herpetologica. In 2005 he became member of the IUCN North Eurasian Reptile Specialist Group.

His scientific interests and activities include research, promotion and conservation of amphibians and reptiles, resolution of the issue of massive avian mortality from power lines. Regions of interest include the Caspian Sea region and the Caucasus.

As an author and photographer, Mark has contributed to “National Geographic Young Explorer” and “National Geographic Russia”, “Ecologia i zhizn” (Environment and Life), “Nauka i zhizn” (Science and Life”), “Mir zhivotnikh” (World of Animals), “Nasha flora and fauna” (Our Flora and Fauna), as well as various television and radio segments. He is the author of more than 80 scientific and non-fiction publications devoted to research, promotion and conservation of biological diversity.

In 1983 he graduated from zoology department of biology faculty of the N.I Lobachevsky State University of the city of Gorkiy (now Nizhniy Novgorod) and defended his Candidate of Science Degree in Biology with specialization in ecology in 2004. From 2004 up to now he has worked as coordinator of the society for protection of amphibians and reptiles affiliated with the Nizhniy Novgorod Regional Public Organization “Ecological Center “Dront””  (http://dront.ru/nooar/)
