Purpose: 

The UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator is responsible for hands-on UNIX and Linux system administration, system performance, metrics collection and reporting, capacity planning, hardware lifecycle management, system installations, secure system builds, system standards and documentation, system monitoring, logging, alerting, alert response, system backups, disaster recovery and service and maintenance contracts.

Responsibilities: 
  • Responsible for global backup strategy.
  • Evaluate and recommend best methods for storing, backing up, and securing data.
  • Manage and operate backup processes including, backup tapes, tape library, offsite tape storage, storage retention and monitoring country office backup processes.
  • Provide data protection, recovery and business continuity; test and validate disaster recovery and business continuity methods for the UNIX/Linux environment.
  • Analyze system failure and recovery; insure the consistency and integrity of file systems.
  • Install software, apply patches, manage file systems, monitor performance and troubleshoot.
  • Administer user accounts and security.
  • Proactively perform system tuning.
  • Responsible for capacity planning and sizing.
  • Configure and manage Storage Area Networks.
  • Manage hardware lifecycle, refresh and migrations.
  • Perform initial server rack installations, operating system installations, secure configuration and documentation.
  • Interact with various vendors about providing support and maintenance.
  • Maintain the hardware inventory, manage and plan software licenses.
  • Develop operational and security standards, procedures, practices and documentation.
  • Identify and select appropriate tools, data, and analysis techniques to diagnose problems and develop solutions.
  • Other projects as required.
Requirements: 
  • 8+ years of directly related work experience or degree preferred.
  • In depth knowledge of HP UNIX and Linux operating systems and SAN management.
  • Expertise in planning, documenting and testing disaster recovery procedures and systems.
  • Strong knowledge and hands on experience of HP Data Protector preferred.
  • Strong vendor management, escalation and problem resolution methods.
  • May at times require lifting and moving of technical equipment, which is often times heavy.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff, verbally and in writing to facilitate the understanding of technical issues to non-technical staff.
  • Willingness to be on call as part of 24/7 support.
