Orr was attacked as he cleaned the enclosure of a 4-year-old tiger named Alexander. The attack occurred at Shambala Preserve, which is run by the actress Tippi Hendren. The sanctuary has 65 cats, including lions, tigers, leopards and servals. “This just goes to show that big cats are, were, and will always be wild animals,” said Josephine Martell of IFAW. “There are 15,000 thousand big cats just like this one in captivity all over the United States.

“The Canadian government’s claim that 98% of the seals are killed humanely in
the commercial seal hunt is exposed in the report as being scientifically
incorrect. This report reveals the truth about Canada’s commercial seal
hunt, and destroys one of the greatest myths constantly propagated by the
Canadian government”, said Sheryl Fink, Senior Researcher with
IFAW. In its examination of Canada’s commercial seal hunt, the EFSA
scientists found that:
there is strong evidence that, in practice, effective killing does not

This past April, the Austrian Parliament unanimously voted on a motion in
favor of a trade ban. If the ban passes in early 2008, this decision could make
Austria the fourth nation in the European Union to implement a ban on seal
products, following Belgium, The Netherlands and Slovenia. As with other
national bans, this initiative will eliminate the Austrian market from the
commercial seal trade, putting further pressure on the Canadian government to
end the commercial seal hunt.

Today’s report, dubbed the London Report on Illegal Whaling, comes as the
Government of Japan prepares to launch its whaling fleet into international
waters later this week. Its dramatic findings add to a growing body of
legal opinion sharply critical of Japan’s expanding whaling operations.

According to the report, the world is now being confronted with a persistent
and combined environmental, development and energy crisis that acknowledges the
importance of extinction rates and biodiversity on humanity’s very prospects for
survival. Current documented rates of extinction are roughly 100 times
higher than rates indicated in fossil records, and the UNEP report suggests that
extinction rates may increase up to 10,000 times the base rate over the coming
decades.

Federal Minister Seehofer declared in March 2007 publicly that he wanted to
implement a national trade ban speedily as a legislative procedure on an
EU-level could take years. In a letter to IFAW in September 2007 though, Mr.
Seehofer declared that the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel now wants to wait
for a European Commission’s expertise on the subject.
The EU Environmental Commissioner Dimas had himself recommended national
bans to the EU member states.

“This export should not have
taken place. It undermines the good reputation that the Solomon Islands
Government has built up since taking the decision to ban the export of live
dolphins in 2005. We implore the Government to reinstate that ban
immediately for the sake of the Solomon Island’s precious marine wildlife and
their standing on the international stage,” Mick McIntyre, Director of IFAW Asia
Pacific, said. Recent research by IFAW has shown that the diversity
of both whale and dolphin species in waters of the Solomon Islands

Russia has fewer than 450-500 Amur (also known as Siberian
or Ussury) tigers in the wild, and no more than 35 Amur leopards. Historically,
fines in Russia for killing a tiger or leopard in Russia have been hopelessly
low - less than 2,000 rubles, or US$ 50 based on exchange rates from five years
ago. The new penalty for poaching a tiger, for example, is US$ 20,000. Both of
these rare species are killed by poachers to supply the international market.
