Santa Fe Update

Howdy partners!

Greetings from the great American West! This morning we held an event on the windy tarmac of the Santa Fe Airport. We are so appreciative of everyone who came out to join our cause.

Santa_fe We were honored to meet the Secretary of Environment for New Mexico Ron Curry, who read a proclamation on behalf of Governor of New Mexico, and '08 Presidential candidate, Bill Richardson. The Governor, a proven environmental leader at the state, Federal and international level, is in Washington this week and could not be with us. So Secretary Curry read the his proclamation officially designating May 16th"Save the Whales Day" for the entire State of New Mexico!

Secretary Curry is also an avid balloonist and promised that on his next hot air balloon trip, he'll attach a sign to his balloon to take the whale protection message to new heights above this gorgeous state.

Other leaders joining us this morning and showing their support included Valerie Espinoza, Santa Fe County Clerk; James Flores, the Public Information Officer for the New Mexico Secretary of State; and Carol Oldham, Southwest Regional Coordinator for the Sierra Club of New Mexico, a leader on global warming and forestry issues statewide.

The President of Cape Air, Dan Wolf, also joined this morning's event with his wife Heidi! How perfect is that? Dan and Heidi just happened to be in Santa Fe when the Cape Air IFAW Whale Plane was making an appearance! Dan and the good folks from Cape Air gave us a terrific send off from Cape Cod last week. It was good to see his and Heidi's familiar faces so far from home cheering us on!

The message of the Whale Plane is also being spread in the Santa Fe and statewide by media representatives who have covered our journey and joined us for our sendoff this morning. Today has been a long day of flying, and it's been absolutely incredible! We learned last evening we would not be permitted were to do an event at the airport in Las Vegas so we are pushing straight through to Santa Monica. (We are ready to see the ocean again!) As we fly over the mountains and desert everyone is reminded about how truly amazing our country is. We are finding the topographical features in Henry's textbooks and pointing them out on the ground!

The time Henry and I have been able to spend together, in the air, at events, over meals and in our hotel rooms, has brought to mind the special times my father and I have shared over the years. Happy Birthday Dad! You are very much with us in our thoughts on this trip West.

As I finish this update we are passing the Hollywood sign on the hills above Los Angeles. Ahead lies Santa Monica! Tomorrow's event is at 11:00 AM PT at the Santa Monica Airport. Henry and I can't wait to help Save the Whales "SoCal style."

Check back soon for more photos, video and updates! Thanks for your support!
