IFAW Seal Hunt Diary - 4.2.07 - Hunt Video

In the video above, Senior Researcher Sheryl Fink talks about the opening day of the Canadian seal hunt.

Katie McConnell posts her thoughts below:

Today, the 2007 Canadian commercial seal hunt started. The IFAW team traveled by plane and helicopter to areas in and around the Gulf of St. Lawrence and observed a single sealing vessel as it began hunting seals for the first time this year. As expected, sealers were shooting at seals on small ice pans from their boat. What we saw today was indicative of hunting in poor ice conditions. We saw a lot of long-distance hunting – sealers with rifles propped up on the bow of their boat, firing at a seal on slushy ice.

As earlier reports indicate, there has been a significant lack of ice in and around the southern part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence this year. In normal years, it is common to find a large concentration of seal pups in a single location, however this year is the exception. The sealing vessel we observed this morning had to search out small pans of ice where one or two seals were located. In some cases, a smaller boat was deployed to the particular pan where the seal was hooked and dragged onto the boat. Please help IFAW to end this cruel hunt by visiting www.stopthesealhunt.org to take action today.

I don't know what the apologists/defenders of these cruel seal massacres hope to have achieved with their rude, ill-tempered and lacking in compassion posts on this site but it is precisely because of their rants and inability to accept video filmed evidence of unacceptable cruelty being meted out to the juvenile helpless pups on these hunts at the hands of the greedy fur hunters that I have come to a decision whereby only animal welfare/protection groups and societies like the IFAW and RSPCA will benefit from my donations. Cheque in the post IFAW. You're doing a sterling job. And keep the pressure on for the UK to bring in a national ban on the importation of Canadian seal pelts and seal products.

replying to Elizabeth....I did not write that response that has been atributed to me. I don't know what happened there but trust me I hate this seal hunt and have been active since the 1970"s in trying to get it stopped. I have written letters to government and media and contributed in trying to get this brutal slaughter stopped. Every Spring I am brought to tears about what happens on the ice just so people can have a coat or some trival trinket made of seal skin. If I could save one seal from slaughter I would. Maybe Rick would like to know that when veterinarians were taken to the hunt they figured that up to 42% of the seals were skinned alive!!! It is a disgrace...All I can wish is that this hunt will eventually be stopped forever. The seal nurseries are disappearing for lack of ice but they still allow for a kill of 270,000. That is like killing the population of the city I live in...imagine!!

I understand that 90% of the worlds commerce is controlled by the Masons...if they want to trade in seal pelts then there's nothing ANY animal rights groups can do about it.I guess they control the hunting farms in Texas and other places as well...you will NEVER see animal hunting farms shut down...groups like IFAW may make a lot of money protesting them ..BUT...they WON'T be shut down....IFAW don't have real power when it comes to controlling such activity...SO IFAW is just beating their heads against a brick wall....nothing will change...to think otherwise is folly....plain & simple...

Rick, what video are you watching?? If you watch these videos, you'll see these innocents being slaughtered and then skinned alive. If it makes you feel so much more comfortable and soft and warm, keep telling yourself how this isn't torture.
We also see them being clubbed?? What part of the video didn't you watch. If you feel this is okay, then watch out for people who feel the same as you!! If you can kill something this innocent, you can kill period!
Oh, and by the way, they leave the flesh out on the ice, so when you say they are using the flesh, you need to start watching the videos that give the real story!!

Adrian, why is that people such as yourself want to bring in other animals that are being tortured instead of just keeping to one torture at a time! These seals are the thing right now, the other tortures get their needed attention too.
But for now, we are looking at another form of torture that shouldn't be happening! And to baby seals. The reason this is happening is because some women/men feel they have the right to demand that these innocents die just so they can wear them on their backs. Well to them I say, get a life!! And save a life!!
This is one of the most barbaric acts to befall baby creatures. This is not something that people need, this isn't like food that we need, it is just selfishness that they want to wear them on their backs. And the murderers that are out there killing for these people, they are only doing it for profits. To them I say, get a job!!
It is sad when some humans feel they have the right to take the lives of others. We are the only species on this earth that kills and tortures! And we call ourselves 'humans.' Should we be called the animal?
DO THE RIGHT THING!

You people are dumb and ignorant. this site is about seals, not genocide, lambs or chickens. It is about SEALS. So get a grip and if you are not here to protest the killing of these majestic creatures then bug off! These animals CAN feel and apparently 'Rick' you cannot! If you support this then why don't you go do it you disgusting man. What did these animals ever do to deserve any of this. To be skinned alive? What kind of fate is that to a not only cute animal but one that also feels. Let's bash you in the head and see if you can feel it in a couple of hours when we come back to do it again, drag you to the boat by a hook, and skin you alive, ripping at your flesh, all while you're alive. I'll be standing on the sidelines listening to you scream, then i'll ask you if it hurts. This is what happens to these majestic animals. And don't get me wrong, this is not the biggest issue in the world, but go to those websites then, and post your own opinions, this is just for SEALS. I love animals and would rather live with them, than people.

This message is to reply Megan's. I agree with her that Africa's horrendous genocides and wars and global warming are important and alarming issues that needed to be adressed. But so is seal hunting. Seal hunting is horrific, cruel, and done by greedy "fishermans" whose only care is making money. Megan: I guarantee you that those of us who are supporting the end of seal hunting also care about other issues such as the ones you mention. This website is dedicated to explain, with facts and figures, what the seal hunting is about and what it must be ended. Since I have been involved with this cause and many others, I found out that those who care about animal welfare also care about human, environment, and the planet's general welfare. And no, I do not work for IFAW, I just care for my planet. Now, I have two questions for you: if you agree with seal hunting, what are you doing on this site? and two, do you care and actively participate in these causes you mention as "more important" (global warming, Africa's genocide)? I sure hope so

Shame on the person who says the seal hunt is not cruel. What is wrong with this world. Do we have no soul? To kill a baby animal just to sell its fur is ridiculous and needs to stop. These are gods wonderful creatures we are murdering and I pity the soul of the person who has done such a horrible crime.

Thanks for your messages. FYI, Harp seals eat a wide variety of fish and marine invertebrates, but most of them have no commercial value to fishermen. Although seals do eat some cod (it accounts for about 3% of their diet according to scientific surveys) they also eat crab, crustaceans, krill and capelin.

Thanks for your comments on our blog. There have been many questions asked here so I would like to supply you with some answers. There are many good reasons to stop the seal hunt, here are just three:
1. The seal hunt is unacceptably cruel. IFAW hunt observers have witnessed the hooking and dragging of live seals from one location to another, wounding but not sufficiently killing seals causing undue suffering, and even the skinning of live seals.
2. The number of harp seals being killed is not biologically sustainable. The Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for harp seals in 2006 was 335,000 animals, which exceeds the government’s estimate of sustainable yield. In the last four out of five years, the actual number of seals killed exceeded the TAC. Removing so many animals from one population is putting the species at unnecessary and significant risk.
3. Canada’s commercial seal hunt is wasteful and not economically viable. Without significant financial and governmental support the Canadian seal hunt could not exist as a self-sustaining industry. Instead of investing in meaningful employment and investment opportunities for Newfoundlanders, the federal government continues to fund and support a brief, seasonal hunt that contributes less than one-half of one percent of the Newfoundland Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The Canadian government often misleads the public by comparing the commercial seal hunt to the killing of farm animals in the food industry. Unlike abattoirs, the seal hunt is an unpredictable, unmanageable hunt for wild animals which takes place under hurried conditions. It is precisely these conditions that have led some experts to conclude that this hunt can never satisfy the requirements of a humane hunt
I urge you to take a look through our site to learn more about the seal hunt. IFAW never uses whitecoat images when discussing the seal hunt. In fact, the picture on the banner is of a beater seal pup, between 2 weeks and 3 months old which is allowed to be taken as part of the hunt. Please also view our footage of the seal hunt using hackapiks, or refer to our learn more pages to get the facts on what is happening out on the ice.
Thanks again for your comments.
