WATCH: Helping a family foster a homeless dog and her puppies

We were doing a survey in Guadalupana, a low-income neighborhood in Playa de Carmen, when we found a homeless mommy dog with six puppies.

A kind neighbor had let the dog and her puppies stay on her patio. They were under a broken car which provided protection from the sun and the rain.

But the puppies were growing up fast, and they started to roam the neighborhood. The owner of the house was very concerned that the puppies could get hit by a car.

She didn’t know what to do.

She considered calling the municipality to collect the puppies. Luckily, after offering her some advice and support to avoid having the puppies roam free, she agreed to foster the brood.

We could help.

We immediately brought a bunch of bricks and built an improvised fence, as well as water and food bowls made out of repurposed plastic bottles. The kids from the house were very happy and helped us, their reward was spending more time with the puppies.

All the puppies and the mamma dog were dewormed, vaccinated and spayed/neutered.

In the end, all the puppies were able to grow up safely and all were adopted by the neighbors.

This is a good example of how with little things like recycled bottles and bricks, we can encourage people to be part of the solution to help animals in need.
