Strong protection measures for wildlife sought as international summit on illegal trade begins in London

As decision-makers from around 50 countries meet in London tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss illegal wildlife trade, strong measures are being sought to protect elephants, rhinos, tigers and other threatened species from the bloody poaching crisis.

The London Summit on Illegal Wildlife Trade is hosted by the UK Government, HRH Prince Charles and the Duke of Cambridge. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) urges governments attending to agree a series of measures which will ensure real and lasting protection for wildlife.

De Verenigde Staten gaan de handel in ivoor verbieden. Dat blijkt uit de gisteren gepresenteerde National Strategy for Combating Wildlife. Zeven maanden na de oproep van president Barack Obama om wereldwijd actie te ondernemen tegen stroperij, komen de Verenigde Staten zelf met een handelsverbod in ivoor. Daarnaast wil Obama met andere landen afspraken maken over internationale handhaving om uiteindelijk een einde te maken aan de illegale handel in ivoor.

        持续5天的空中“大象普查”显示,肯尼亚著名的察沃国家公园(Tsavo National Park)中大象的数量正在减少。初步调查结果表明,目前园中大象的数量是11,076,而在2011年,大象的数量是12,573,数量的减少让所有人都感到不安。

       数量的减少可能与两个因素相关:一方面,受周期性的自我调节和生态规律的影响,例如干旱、产崽间隔时间、能生育个体的性别比例等。另一方面,过去的三年中察沃公园的象群面临严重的偷猎威胁,这也可能导致了大象数量的减少。更可怕的是,偷猎者现在不仅将偷猎目标锁定在长了长牙的成熟大象或象群首领,还包括整个大象家庭,甚至连幼崽都不放过。这样势必会导致大象数量减少,并影响种群的繁殖、发展。可怕的是,偷猎者如今都选择在夜间行动,这使得更加难以防范。
