The purpose of ensuring sound policy and strong laws is to provide a framework for animal protection. Many laws affecting animals are implemented at the community level. There are many ways that you can make a difference for animals in your community.

From educating your friends and family about including pets in disaster preparation plans to spreading the word about responsible pet ownership or ensuring your local council has strong animal welfare policies.

These policy guidelines were developed by the Sustainable Jersey “animals in communities” project (New Jersey, USA) to ensure that animal welfare be considered in plans to develop sustainable communities. They are an excellent place to start your research.
