“The overall spill is made up of several slicks, two to three kilometers wide
along a total extension of approximately forty kilometers,” reported the local
newspaper El Chubut. The Argentine government is analyzing recent satellite
imagery to determine the cause of the spill but has yet to determine where the
oil came from. According to local media reports, several corporations are
suspected of causing the spill. Locally, IFAW is working with The
Fundación Patagonia Natural (FPN) on site. Currently the center is caring for
430 birds.

“The Canadian government’s claim that 98% of the seals are killed humanely in
the commercial seal hunt is exposed in the report as being scientifically
incorrect. This report reveals the truth about Canada’s commercial seal
hunt, and destroys one of the greatest myths constantly propagated by the

"This is happy news for 50 humpback whales but Japan’s whaling continues to
expand,” said Patrick Ramage, IFAW Global Whale Program Manager.
“Withdrawing wild threats to kill humpbacks isn't enough, Japan needs to stop
whaling and join the emerging global consensus for whale

This past April, the Austrian Parliament unanimously voted on a motion in
favor of a trade ban. If the ban passes in early 2008, this decision could make
Austria the fourth nation in the European Union to implement a ban on seal
products, following Belgium, The Netherlands and Slovenia. As with other
national bans, this initiative will eliminate the Austrian market from the
commercial seal trade, putting further pressure on the Canadian government to
end the commercial seal hunt.

Orr was attacked as he cleaned the enclosure of a 4-year-old tiger named Alexander. The attack occurred at Shambala Preserve, which is run by the actress Tippi Hendren. The sanctuary has 65 cats, including lions, tigers, leopards and servals. “This just goes to show that big cats are, were, and will always be wild animals,” said Josephine Martell of IFAW. “There are 15,000 thousand big cats just like this one in captivity all over the United States.

According to the report, the world is now being confronted with a persistent
and combined environmental, development and energy crisis that acknowledges the
importance of extinction rates and biodiversity on humanity’s very prospects for
survival. Current documented rates of extinction are roughly 100 times
higher than rates indicated in fossil records, and the UNEP report suggests that
extinction rates may increase up to 10,000 times the base rate over the coming
decades.
