Statement: IFAW Calls Foul on Detroit Tigers Photo Op

This past Friday, the Detroit Tigers organization posted photos on its Facebook page of its star players handling a tiger cub at a spring training camp.

Tracy Coppola, Campaigns Officer, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW;, issued the following statement regarding the event:

“Undoubtedly, the Detroit Tigers, like so many other animal enthusiasts in the U.S., did not realize the photo op presented some fairly significant public safety and animal welfare issues.

Letzten November entdeckten Bewohner des kleinen und abgelegenen Dorfs Anini im Nordosten Indiens vier umherstreunende Tigerjunge. Das Ungewöhnliche daran war, dass die kleinen Tiger nicht in Begleitung ihrer Mutter gesehen wurden.

Bald darauf beklagten die Dorfbewohner Verluste von Geflügel und Schweinen; die verwaisten Tigerjungen waren offenbar hungrig.

If there is one issue which has united animal protectors in Europe, it has definitely been the campaign against the seal hunt. The concern for seals is all around Europe, and we want to share with you what Europeans think about the seal hunt and about the EU ban.

We give the floor to the Belgian organization, Global Action in the Interest of Animals, GAIA, which has been instrumental in helping seals by working tirelessly for the introduction of a national ban on imports of seal products in 2007 and then by joining the EU campaign.
