Partnering with IFAW
Since 2002, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises have collaborated on educational projects to support whale conservation, and to promote whale watching as an economic alternative to commercial whaling.
The Company
Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises has been operating the only Mid-Cape whale watch vessel since 1981. The company supports a full-time year-round education program including activities on the water and in schools, parks, camps, libraries, and community centers. Programs are offered for both students and teachers. Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises is actively involved in Massachusetts Marine Educators, the National Marine Educators Association, as well as regional science and environmental education associations. Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises observes the National Marine Fisheries Service's guidelines for whale watching.
The Vessel
The M/V Whale
Watcher was delivered in the Spring of 2000. It is 120 feet long with a
spacious open upper deck and lower deck viewing areas as well as two enclosed
cabins and a galley offering food & beverages. The state-of-the-art M/V Whale Watcher is the fastest and most
whale-friendly vessel of her kind in the northeast. Her jet-powered technology
serves to protect the marine environment and its inhabitants; which furthers the
environmentally friendly philosophy of the company. The vessel is fully licensed
and inspected by the United States Coast Guard. Captains and crew follow all
Coast Guard and National Marine Fisheries Service safety and whale watching
guidelines. A safety orientation is included in every on-board program.
Educational Programs
All on-land programs and teacher
workshops are offered free of charge for schools, libraries, and community
groups on Cape Cod. Hyannis Whale Watcher is approved by the Massachusetts
Department of Education as a Professional Development Provider. Professional
Development Points (PDP's) required for teacher re-certification are granted for
workshop participation.
