Purpose
Under the guidance of the Manager, Emergency Relief-Disasters, responsible for the implementation and monitoring of IFAW projects in accordance with the IFAW strategic plan. Specific activities include emergency response worldwide and on the ground project work.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Train for, and respond to, IFAW emergency responses, including hands on work. Trained to the level to act as ER field team leader.
  • Maintain oversight of ER projects and liaise with country office staff to ensure smooth operation of ER projects. Supervise and monitor on the ground staff, grantees and contractors, and daily operations of ER projects. Responsible for visits to project sites and timely submission of project status reports and documentation.
  • Team membership and/or leadership of IFAW staff and volunteers in emergency responses.
  • Monitor expenditure and track budgets for assigned ER projects.
  • Support IFAW HQ departments (Direct Marketing, Online Campaigns & Marketing, Philanthropy, Finance, Communications, etc.) in achieving IFAW institutional goals through ER projects.
  • Maintain oversight of Emergency Relief Networks internationally with an emphasis of partner agencies in the United States.
  • Provide trainings in emergency management (Incident Command System), emergency animal sheltering, and technical rescue.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • College degree preferred or equivalent relevant experience (e.g. vet. technician, animal rescue and disaster management, animal behavior, etc).
  • At least two years working in a hands-on environment with animals, or with emergency relief or disaster management, or related relevant NGO experience.
  • Able and willing to travel anywhere in the world on extremely short notice, work long hours, and live in difficult (often dangerous) conditions for a month or more at a time.
  • Physically fit and capable of passing the “vigorous” fit test (3 miles, 45 min, 45 lb).
  • Able to work interdependently, optimizing the skills available within the team.
  • Meet minimum NARSC standards for “Technical” level for shelter and field rescue worker.
  • High level of professionalism – the mix of dependability, initiative, industry and ability to make sound judgments, within agreed guidelines, that will earn respect and achieve success in chaotic, fast moving and high pressure environments. Ability to adapt to working in varied environments and to handle high or chronic stress situations.
  • Excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing. Ability to interact harmoniously and communicate effectively with people (both internally and externally) from varying educational, social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Skills in one or more relevant languages preferred.
  • Commitment to animal welfare and promoting IFAW’s mission preferably with experience in the field of animal welfare or conservation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and live under adverse conditions.
