After a meeting with UK Fisheries Minister Ben Bradshaw, the Song of the Whale team headed to the Mediterranean to undertake further research surveys for sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and other species.
Surveys focused on the western-central part of the Mediterranean, from
Gibraltar east to Sardinia and south of the Balearic Islands to the North
African continental slope waters. The team also visited Palma de
Mallorca for the 2nd Meeting of Parties to ACCOBAMS (the UNEP Agreement for the
Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black and Mediterranean Sea) in mid-November,
with a stop in Morocco at the end of the month.
The Song of the Whale worked closely with local research groups and ACCOBAMS, which invited the SOTW team, to plan and conduct the survey. The team provided information about the threats to whales in the region.
The team also hosted local students and scientists onboard to work together and share information about the non-invasive techniques IFAW uses to study whales and their marine habitats.
