The China Chamber of Commerce of Medicines and Health Products Importers and Exporters and IFAW’s partner organization in the United Kingdom, the Chinese Medicine Association of Suppliers (CMAS), agreed to implement a TM certification program in January 2002.

Known as the "Green Label" in China, the program is designed to ensure consistently high safety and quality for TM products.

In September 2001, IFAW’s China office sponsored a delegation from China to attend the Third International Traditional Chinese Medicine Conference, held at Middlesex University in London.

Professor Zhang Shichen, the former director of the Registration Department of the State Medicine Control Administration, represented the Chinese government’s point of view on what China has done to protect endangered animals and public health standards. Professor Zhang Ruixiang from the China Traditional Chinese Medicine Institute shared his opinion on how to protect biodiversity.

IFAW’s Rebecca Wu focused on the bear bile market in China and the question of how to conserve endangered species while promoting traditional medicine. The presentations by IFAW/China staff aroused great interest.

Almost all attendees agreed that TM should be preserved as a cultural heritage, but also evolve into a cruelty-free, environmentally friendly and ethically responsible practice and philosophy.
