This weekend, hundreds of sea turtles came ashore on Bournemouth beach, as part of IFAW's campaign to raise awareness of the impact of the wildlife souvenir trade on endangered turtles and other species.

Holidaymakers who arrived at the beach were astonished to see the large swarm of life-size cardboard hawksbill turtles and those curious enough to turn the turtles over were rewarded by IFAW's hard-hitting message, which said that:

"Turning the turtle over is the first thing that hunters do".

Indeed, it is when sea turtles crawl onto shore in order to lay their eggs that they are the most vulnerable.  Thousands are slaughtered each year by hunters who turn their shells into trinkets for tourists.
