Photographing Elephants – Painting with Light

Some 50 photographs of elephants in various scenarios, from imposing and iconic to intimate and touching images of this most intelligent and social of species, will be displayed. A number of aerial images of elephant are also included

“Photography is science’s way of painting with light,” says Van Aarde.

“Elephants are my science - photographing them thus makes sense to me.”

Professor Van Aarde is Director of the Conservation Ecology Unit at the University of Pretoria, and one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of African elephants. His exhibition is supported by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW – www.ifaw.org) which is a funder of the “Megaparks for Metapopulations” research initiative which focuses on developing conservation management protocols that will ensure the co-existence of elephants and other species.

Van Aarde has been photographing elephants for more than 10-years while on research excursions to various locations across southern and East Africa.
