IFAW has operated a program for interns as part of the work of the Song of the Whale team since 1987. It provides a unique opportunity for students, scientists and conservationists to gain practical experience of fieldwork on a dedicated whale research vessel, working alongside the full-time SOTW team.
Over 200 participants have benefited from this formative program over the years, and have gone on to use their experience and expertise at work with governments and conservation groups, undertaking Phd’s and other academic studies, or in resource management positions in countries ranging from China, Canada, Tortola, New Zealand, Egypt and Iceland. IFAW generally hosts 2-3 interns onboard at any one time.
