Sharing the Wonder of Whales

Bookmark and Share

Outreach is a vital part of our role and the Song of the Whale team work tirelessly to enthuse others about whales and share their knowledge of the threats to whales and their habitats. The educational and outreach programme includes work with school and community groups, other scientists and researchers, politicians, decision makers, the media and the general public, all aimed at generating support for the conservation and protection of whales.

The new Song of the Whale is specially designed to be adaptable for a range of tasks.  There is dedicated space for computers and acoustic equipment, a large aft deck for accommodating hydrophones and other gear, a bigger saloon area for meetings and classroom sessions, and the increased cabin space means that more interns, scientists, children and other visitors can benefit from spending time onboard with the Song of the Whale team, gaining unique hands-on experience of non-invasive research.

Song of the Whale team’s unusual education and outreach activities include:

  • A research programme based on developing and promoting benign or non-invasive studies of whales, dolphins and porpoises. The team has pioneered the use of acoustic and video observation techniques that allow the study of whales without harming or disturbing them. This credible, up-to-the-minute scientific base provides a secure platform from which the Song of the Whale team is able to generate awareness and train others.
  • An intern scheme - enabling students, scientists and conservationists to gain valuable and unique experience by working alongside the Song of the Whale team in the field. Volunteers join the team for a few weeks or more to learn about and engage in the work of the team.
  • Work with schools, colleges and universities that includes dedicated onboard sessions for students where they can learn about the boat and the threats and dangers to whales and their habitats.
  • Public education and political advocacy work that includes awareness raising through the press and media, inviting the public onboard to meet the team and find out more about their work, meeting with and lobbying politicians and providing research findings to conservation managers and decision makers.

Please join us in our efforts to provide a secure future for cetaceans and ocean habitats around the world.
