NAMSC is a database of digital photo-identification images of sperm whales and associated data; the result of a collaboration between a number of organisations working on sperm whales in this region.

NAMSC is available to contributors and other collaborating groups on CD-ROM.

Photo-identification of individual animals is a powerful field technique for studying live whales. NAMSC aims to promote conservation research in the region by allowing researchers to share and exchange images in their individual catalogues.

To date, five editions of the catalogue have been published (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004). Edition one published by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and CML (Leiden University). Editions two to five published by IFAW.

An ad. hoc. steering committee: Lisa Steiner, Jacky Ciano, Ruben Huele and Jonathan Gordon supervised the compilation of the first edition of NAMSC.
