Tell your MP that Stopping Animal Cruelty is an important Issue to You

Since 1999 Canadians, such as you, have written letters to MPs, signed petitions and taken other actions to ensure that there is effective animal cruelty legislation in Canada. MPs have been told that it is not acceptable to only increase penalties when the real issue is our courts’ inability to get convictions. Under the current legislation only ¼ of 1% of animal cruelty complaints lead to a conviction.

A new Government means a new opportunity to get your voice heard - stand up and stop animal cruelty.   Let our new Members of Parliament know that stopping animal cruelty is important to you.

Write or call your MP and let them know how important this issue is to you and how important it is that they take action as your elected official.

Sample Letter to MPs:

As a voter I feel that it is important that you represent my views in Parliament.  I understand that on April 9th 2008 Parliament passed Bill S-203, however, this legislation has done nothing to update and modernize Canada’s animal cruelty legislation; instead, our laws remain ineffective.

I am embarrassed that Canada provides virtually no protection for animals that are suffering from neglect, has not federally addressed the issue of dog-fighting, and provides virtually no protection for wild and stray animals from acts of cruelty.

The biggest problem with our current legislation, which continues to exist under Bill S-203, is that it is difficult to enforce.  In fact less than 1% of animal cruelty complaints lead to successful convictions.  We need new legislation that will repair these inadequacies and close the existing loop holes that result in animal abusers continuing to get away with their crimes.

I am requesting that you represent me as your constituent and support modern and effective legislation that addresses the core problems and truly protects animals from cruelty.
