IFAW launched its new Song of the Whale in the summer of 2004. It is a boat with an urgent mission – to help improve the understanding of whales and generate public and political support for their protection.
Leading The Way
With its custom-made observation platforms, specialised computer, recording and satellite communications equipment, and the combined technical experience of its full-time team, Song of the Whale is one of the most effective non-invasive whale research vessels in the world.
By investigating and sharing with others the fascinating and often mysterious underwater lives of whales and other marine animals, IFAW hopes to inspire and encourage each of us to act on their behalf.
Sailing Into Action
The Song of the Whale team continues to develop and expand on their important research and advocacy work into threatened and endangered marine mammals and their habitats. This includes educating students, training scientists, developing and sharing non-invasive research techniques and providing a basis for whale protection work in many regions of the world. Song of the Whale can also be mobilised to assist in saving whales and other marine mammals from entanglements in fishing gear, oil spills and other marine disasters.
Song of the Whale is owned and operated by IFAW’s Charitable Trust
