IFAW has fulfilled its five-year, US$2.5 million pledge to the South African National Parks (SANP) to fund the purchase of safe habitat for elephants. We helped SANP purchase more than 6,048 hectares (14,939 acres) at Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape; and an additional 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres) at Marakele National Park, north of Johannesburg.
While many elephant populations across Africa have experienced dramatic declines
during the past 70 years, Addo’s elephant population has recovered from the
brink of extinction. There are now 330 elephants at Addo. At Marakele, the
elephant population now numbers nearly 70, but the Park will accommodate up to
250 elephants once expansion is complete.
