National Whale Day 2009

Australia's second National

Whale Day is on Saturday 6th

June 2009.

National Whale Day was launched in 2008 by IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) as a day for all Australians to celebrate their love of whales, as well as draw attention to some of the threats they face today, which include whaling, climate change, ship strikes, marine debris and ocean noise.

For National Whale Day this year, IFAW is running a photo competition as a way for Australians to celebrate their beloved whale-friends in a fun and unique way.

We are asking people to send photos of themselves or friends making a ‘whale tail’ with their hands as a symbol of their support for whale conservation.  The photos will be added to a special website at www.tailsforwhales.org, and go in the running to win great prizes.

How to enter

  • Individual entry
  • - send in a photo of yourself making a whale tail with your hands – the most creative individual photo wins!

  • Group entry - send in as many individual photos of your friends, family, colleagues, school class or club making whale tails with their hands as you can – the group that sends the highest number of creative and original entries wins!

Important! Every photo must be accompanied by an entry form, which can be downloaded on the right hand side of this page.

Once you’ve sent in your photo with completed form, we’ll upload it to www.tailsforwhales.org and email you to let you know where you can find it.

The competition closes on 31 July 2009 and winners will be announced in August 2009.

National Whale Day

Last year over 20 events were held all over Australia. From Marion Bay in Tasmania to Exmouth in WA Humpback Icon Project (HIP) communities celebrated cetaceans, this year we want to make it even bigger.  There are lots of other ways you can celebrate, for example:

  • Host your own event, a beachside bbq or get together with friends.
  • Take photos of your friends and family making a whale tail with their hands and submit it to www.tailsforwhales.org
  • Take action and tell the Australian Government that you want them to act and protect whales from whaling.
  • Spread the word, tell others about the threats facing whales and what they can do to help.

    Message from Christine Anu:

"Australians' love of whales and the ocean is world famous!  We're still trying to protect whales but it's time to celebrate everything we love about them and their environment.  Whales are worth so much to us, they are part of our culture, our environment and our communities.  Whales are national treasures and whever you are in Australia I invite you to join IFAW and celebrate National Whale Day."
