Bali Street Dogs - InAW

The Indonesian island of Bali is well known as a tropical paradise. Beautiful beaches, lovely weather and exotic sights make this a popular destination for tourists around the world. But the situation isn’t quite as idyllic for the thousands of dogs that roam the streets.

Parasite-riddled - hungry, hairless and enduring abysmal conditions – these dogs live on whatever scraps they can find. Although you might like to feed these starving dogs, it’s apparent that a small handout from a tourist will not give them a chance to survive. Although many of these dogs are owned roaming, lack of access to affordable veterinary care means they are often in pitiful condition.

But the work of Indonesian Animal Welfare – InAW, funded by IFAW does offer hope to these unfortunate animals.

InAW operates a Mobile Veterinary Clinic which has treated thousands of roaming dogs for skin diseases and fungi, parasites, worms and wounds. The dedicated veterinarians have also carried out many thousands of sterilisations to help reduce the population.

Through IFAW’s support InAW has a van to help make these mobile outreach efforts possible. Our support also helps purchase the much-needed medicines and equipment needed to treat the island's desperate animals.

At 145 kilometres (90 miles) long and 80 kilometres (50 miles) wide, Bali is not much larger than Luxembourg. But in Asia, the impact of the Mobile Veterinary Clinic is well known and is used as a model of effectiveness and compassion, with the team now training other groups in the region.
