Rescuing and Rehabilitating Wild Birds -- China

On 14 December 2001, the Beijing Raptor Rescue Center (BRRC) was officially opened. It is a joint project of IFAW and Beijing Normal University, the first non-profit wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility of its kind in China.

About 200 people attended the Center’s unveiling ceremony, including government officials from the Wildlife Protection Department of the State Forestry Administration, the Beijing Forestry Bureau, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Customs, and the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA).

The Beijing Raptor Rescue Center accepts injured and confiscated raptors (birds of prey such as falcons and hawks) from government agencies and the general public at its facility on the campus of Beijing Normal University. In this way, the Center assists government agencies in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of wild birds that have fallen prey to illegal trapping and trafficking, abuse and the exotic pet trade.

BRRC staff will also provide veterinarians, rehabilitators and volunteers in China with state-of-the-art training in wildlife rescue and care techniques.

BRRC is a "center of excellence" designed to demonstrate proper conservation and animal welfare procedures and standards. It was made possible by the combined efforts of IFAW, Beijing Normal University, Kadorie Farm and Botanical Garden of Hong Kong, the International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC), the California Raptor Center, RSPCA, and the British Embassy in Beijing.
