The rhinos, female calves nicknamed Manasi and Roje, were rescued from the
floodwaters that annually spill over the banks of the Brahmaputra River. The
pair, both three years old, were rescued in the summer of 2004 and rehabilitated
at the Center for Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC). CWRC is located near
Kaziranga National Park, in North East India, and was founded in 2001 through a
collaboration between WTI, IFAW and the Assam Forest Department.

“The Commission’s reply provides a description of the current EU legislative
framework applied to this issue and an analysis of how to possibly address the
Parliament’s request”, said IFAW’s political campaigner in the EU Office, Gaia
Angelini. She also highlighted the Commission’s “commitment to high animal
welfare standards”.
Last week, the Belgian Parliament voted unanimously
to implement a national ban on the import of all seal products, making Belgium

The return was stopped by the Department of Science and Technology 36 hours
before the gorillas were due to return to Cameroon early Wednesday morning 13th
of December. "We understand that in terms of CITES, South Africa,
as the recipient state of the four gorillas that were confiscated in Malaysia,
does not have the authority to re-export the animals, as the question of the
placement of the animals rests with the Management Authority of the state of
confiscation" said Christina Pretorius.

Caring for a pet is a lifelong commitment. Don’t assume your loved one
wants or will accept that responsibility.
Choosing a pet is a personal experience that requires research and
discovering which pet is a good match for the adopter’s preferences, lifestyle,

Four of the birds were sent by Russia’s environmental watchdog to IFAW’s
wildlife rehabilitation center in Moscow. One of the falcons died.
All four gyrfalcons were fully rehabilitated and were released to the
wild on the Kamchatka peninsula this week.
Only about 1,000 gyrfalcon pairs remain in the wild in Russia. Their main
habitat is above the Polar Circle, from the Kola peninsula to Chukotka. Prior to
winter, the birds move south but not far from their main habitat.

The new Gallup poll was commissioned by the International Fund for Animal
Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org) in light of
Iceland’s resumption of commercial whaling. Despite little market
for meat from Iceland’s so-called “scientific” whaling programme, begun in 2003,
whalers have recently harpooned seven endangered fin whales and one minke whale
in a bid to sell the meat commercially.
