Japan’s government-sponsored whaling fleet is currently in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary, where it is hunting a self allocated quota of more than 900 whales. The Southern Ocean Sanctuary is a marine preserve established in 1994 to protect whales from commercial whaling in the waters surrounding Antarctica.

Elephant poaching pandemic featured in latest National Geographic

Entitled “Ivory Wars: The Last Stand in Zakouma,” the piece highlights the story of one mother elephant tagged “Annie” and her travels through and outside of Zakouma NP, in search of food and water sources. Annie was radio-collared and subsequently tracked until her demise to poachers only a few months later.
 
The danger affecting the elephants of this area is not specific to Zakouma NP, but rather to the region as a whole, and especially the periphery of the park which is outside the jurisdiction of Zakouma NP rangers.

Nearly 150 lbs of illegal ivory intercepted at Beijing airport

The passenger, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was standing in the nothing-to-declare customs line at the Beijing Capital International Airport, when the surprise inspection was conducted. 

Elephants are protected under an Appendix I listing of CITES (Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species) law, with international trade for commercial purposes being strictly prohibited. However, since 1997, several CITES decisions have resulted in Appendix II listings for some populations, meaning certain trade is permitted with special permits from CITES.

Southern Ocean Violence Must Stop

“While protesters and whalers clash, Japan’s “scientific” whaling program has already inflicted prolonged painful deaths on hundreds of whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary,” said Darren Kindleysides, IFAW Campaigns Manager.

While claims have previously been made by the CITES (Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species) Secretariat that Japan no longer has significant involvement in the ivory trade industry, this 2.8 ton seizure clearly disproves such statements.

IFAW Releases Rhinos Back To Wild in India

The rhinos, female calves nicknamed Manasi and Roje, were rescued from the floodwaters that annually spill over the banks of the Brahmaputra River. The pair, both three years old, were rescued in the summer of 2004 and rehabilitated at the Center for Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC). CWRC is located near Kaziranga National Park, in North East India, and was founded in 2001 through a collaboration between WTI, IFAW and the Assam Forest Department.

Rectification: EU-Commission does not reject seal ban

“The Commission’s reply provides a description of the current EU legislative framework applied to this issue and an analysis of how to possibly address the Parliament’s request”, said IFAW’s political campaigner in the EU Office, Gaia Angelini. She also highlighted the Commission’s “commitment to high animal welfare standards”.

Last week, the Belgian Parliament voted unanimously to implement a national ban on the import of all seal products, making Belgium the first nation in the European Union to do so.

China halts dog cull after international uproar

The crackdown started in Beijing at the end of October. In response IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare - www.ifaw.org) and other groups organized letter writing campaigns to various Beijing authorities (police department, mayor’s office, and Olympic Organizing Committee) as well as international bodies based outside of China (Chinese Embassies and International Olympic Committee).
