Michel Vandenbosch, founder of the Belgian animal welfare organization GAIA (Global Action in the Interest of Animals), worked tirelessly for the introduction of a national ban on the import of seal products into the EU. The ban was finally passed in 2007.

Jeffrey Flocken, North American Regional Director, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), issued the following statement regarding the opening of M. Wells Steakhouse and the possibility of the inclusion of lion meat on the menu: 

“As M. Wells Steakhouse opens its doors in Long Island City, we strongly urge them against including lion meat on their menu. Not only is it irresponsible to serve an animal that is at risk of extinction, history has shown that diners have no appetite for it.

In bovenstaande diavoorstelling zijn leden van de Wildlife Conservation Division van het Koninkrijk Bhutan te zien, kort na een training die was opgezet in samenwerking met het IFAW en Wildlife Trust of India (IFAW-WTI). Deze speciale training, die een maand duurde, was bedoeld voor de mensen die in Bhutan in de frontlinie werken  en ging over de preventie van wildlife-criminaliteit.

Thanks to International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) supporters, year after year we have been able to take media and decision makers to the ice as we document the cruelty of commercial seal hunt in Canada. 

Now, many leading Europeans have joined IFAW in defending the European ban on products from the commercial seal hunt in Canada as the Canadian government pursues a challenge to the ban’s legality according to the rules of the World Trade Organisation.

Bosnian municipalities have asked the UN Development Program for our advice and have chosen a path that brings their communities together and empowers them.UPDATED 12.10.13: The proposed amendment passed a second reading in the House of Representatives on December 6th.

Together with the United Nations Development Program a small IFAW team embarked on an exciting new journey in Bosnia helping Communities to solve the issues they have with roaming dogs for themselves.

It is the first time a participatory approach is being used in such an instance, and the first results tell us we are on the right track.
