This week saw the UK Government, HRH Prince Charles and the Duke of Cambridge host an Illegal Wildlife Trade Summit in London with decision-makers from around 50 countries attending to discuss how they can work together to fight wildlife crime.

If people insist on buying a puppy, I hope they take care to visit the sellers location and make sure the facilities are clean and comfortable for all of the dogs there. For the Super Bowl game at MetLife Stadium earlier this month, I was neither on team Seattle nor team Denver.

Gisteren was op Nederland 1 het programma 'Floortje naar het einde van de wereld' te zien. In het BNN programma reist Floortje Dessing af naar Zambia om vanuit de hoofdstad Lusaka naar het uitgestrekte en verlaten Kafue National Park te rijden, waar ze de Engelse Rachael bezoekt die hier een olifantenweeshuis runt.

Staatssecretaris Sharon Dijksma van Economische Zaken heeft een bedrag van 1 miljoen euro toegezegd voor de bestrijding van de handel in wilde dieren. Dat maakte ze vandaag bekend tijdens de ‘high level conference on the illegal wildlife trade’ in London. Nederland zal een extra donatie doen aan het ’African Elephant Fund’ voor een duurzaam samenleven van olifanten en de lokale bevolking.

        本周四,约50个国家的政策制定者将齐聚伦敦,共同商讨非法野生动物贸易问题,力求出台有力措施来保护大象、犀牛、老虎和其他濒危物种,免遭盗猎威胁。

        此次应对非法野生动物贸易的高层国际峰会由英国政府,查尔斯王子殿下(HRH Prince Charles)、剑桥公爵威廉王子(the Duke of Cambridge)主办。国际爱护动物基金会(International Fund for Animal Welfare,简称IFAW)呼吁各与会国达成共识,采取一系列措施来确保对野生动物的实际和持久保护。

        令人担忧的是,每15分钟就有一头大象因为象牙被猎杀。据估计每年至少有25,000到50,000头大象因为象牙被屠杀,而所获象牙不过是为了制作毫不必要的装饰品。

        来自28个国家的执法人员共同参与并完成了一项突破性的全球打击野生动物偷猎和走私联合行动,该行动代号为“眼镜蛇二号行动”。这项长达一个月的打击行动和能力建设活动促进了跨境执法合作。同时,行动取得的丰硕战果受到了环保团体的高度赞扬。行动期间,执法人员逮捕了400多名野生动物犯罪人员,侦破了350起横跨非洲和亚洲的大规模野生动物制品非法贸易案件。IFAW为非洲地区开展的调查提供了资金支持,使多名亚非两洲间从事象牙走私的主要案犯落网。

        在眼镜蛇二号行动中,执法人员共缴获犀牛角36根、象牙及其制品3吨以上、龟1万多只、受保护物种的皮张1千多张、欧洲鳗1万多只,以及濒危红木200多吨。被逮捕的罪犯中有多人是野生动物犯罪团伙的头目。
